Not too much longer until Christmas. Who has started shopping? Do you shop early or wait until the last minute? I prefer to shop early and try to pick up little things throughout the year. But with my hectic schedule I haven't been able to do that too much this time. I have a few things packed away but not much. I try to do about 75% of my shopping before December and then do the last 25% right before Christmas. I love the sales and rush of the crowd right before Christmas. I also love the after Thanksgiving sales and the competition atmosphere in the stores. lol

I didn't do the Black Friday thing, either. But I THOUGHT about going out to face the crowds and decided I like breathing waaaaayyyy too much to risk it! These people here are DANGEROUS! Ever since I was a teenager working at Belk in 1991 and heard about a woman being injured in Kay-bee toys over a Barbie Doll, I've not shopped on Black Friday! It TOTALLY changed my perspective. Now, I try to focus on small, meaningful gifts, that are within a reasonable price range.

Biirdy, You won't get any disagreements from me! I say wait even longer to put up the decorations and start the inevitable flogging o' the season. I seem to remember, from childhood, a growing sense of specialness as we got closer to the big day, not because we expected a lot from Santa, but because each day added a new layer of sight or smell (a REAL tree! Yea!) Now we are bombarded with gigantic blow up snowmen at the smiley-faced price of only $99 before Halloween! Bah! Humbug! I always drag out my old and torn up copy of "A Child's Christmas in Wales" and revisit a simpler, and yet far brighter, time. Amy

Re: stannosstacey write: Ok, who faced the crowds on Friday?

I did NOT face the crowds on Friday. In fact I almost never leave my home on black Friday because I hate crowds and traffic and being surrounded by some shoppers that can be really rude. (No offense, I know it couldn't be any of YOU.) On the other hand my Christmas shopping is almost done already and I have only a few more minor things to get. :)

I've nearly finished, mainly because I have surgery due this week to remove a big toe nail which will wipe out next weekend, plus I think I'll want to avoid the worst of the crowds with a sore toe! But I hate that for a couple of weeks already many of the shops are playing Christmas songs and there are trees and decorations up already. There's a "municipal" tree I see on my route to work, always goes up way before the end of November ... every year within a week it is tattered either by bad weather or the local hooligans and long before Christmas it's a sad battered apology for a decration. It should all be banned until 1st December - then it all comes out in one dramatic splash of colour -bring back the magic!

Ok, who faced the crowds on Friday? I was going to but overslept and ended up being lazy and staying home all day. I have started shopping, picking up a little here and there. I have to get mine done early this year since I will be gone the week before Christmas through Christmas visiting Stanno.

Does this mean you are back home now? Or are you still in England... You just keep us hanging here asking questions, lol. I'm STILL very happy for you both. :)

Re: truefriendinme write: Well, I'm still on the Christmas kick...are you? I am still not "done". I've been looking around, getting ideas for gifts, but have NO idea what to shop for this year. I have an inkling it will be very small. Just looking to see if amyone is getting ready. After Halloween, I will be putting up the tree. We can't wait...

I would agree as well, the hype and commercialism can be easily ignored. I always loved xmas...well, still do...LOL. I have so many awesome memories of xmas. Visiting the dept. store windows in Boston when I was young. Going to see the lighting of the tree at Rockefeller Centre. My dad's church decorated with pine boughs with big red ribbon bows, balsam fir trees, candles and poinsettas (yeah, can you believe that? my dad was a minister...he he he). The smells, the lights, the sounds. Hoping for snow on xmas day. A fire in the fireplace xmas eve and then on xmas day. It is what you make of it.

I come from a strange family, that decided long ago not to exchange gifts (that was when I was 21). I do send Christmas cards. So in answering your question I'm done :)

Re: truefriendinme write: Well, to CybafungalUK: I hope Christmas improves for you. I realize you're fed up with the commercialized aspect of it, but something you must realize is that you don't HAVE to celebrate it that way! I don't. I used to, but then I realized how wrong it is to cheapen this totally special, (literally) God given holiday. I've toned my gift giving down to the bare minimum. I give small, token gifts. My kids don't beg for things they know I won't buy --they have learned early on that Christmas is NOT about "gimme, gimme". While most of us celebrate the religious aspects, others only like the bliss of the season. I truly don't give a hoot why OTHER people celebrate, because religion is a PERSONAL choice. So, I choose to celebrate it with my family MY way. Once you realize you don't HAVE to keep up with the pace the world takes while celebrating Christmas, you will have so much more fun watching others and enjoy yours! Merry, Merry, Merry and Happy, Happy, Happy! (Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!)

Exactly - Truefriend! Just because Christmas is commercialized doesn't mean it has to be to me. I love the season and I try to ignore the hype. I love Christmas for the religious reason and also how it makes me feel inside - warm and loving.
