Re:wyldechild write: Calling someone a nymphomaniac or accusing them of nymphomania isn't something that can be defined by science. Nymphomania is a layperson's term used to label a woman, or a nympho, whose sex drive or sexual activity is subjectively deemed too high. The term "nymphomania," is not scientifically meaningful simply because there are no specific criteria that would define a nymphomaniac. In other words, there isn't a way to determine how much sexual desire or activity is too much. The clinical conditions that include the concept of high levels of sexual desire and/or activity are hypersexuality and sexual addiction or compulsivity. The central features of these disorders are that sexual activity is an insatiable need, often interfering with other areas of everyday functioning; sex is impersonal, with no emotional intimacy; and despite frequent orgasms, sexual activity is generally not satisfying. The label of nymphomania is used in a pejorative and derogatory manner, almost exclusively in reference to women. To many men, the idea of a woman with a greater sex drive than their own is somewhat threatening, so they may use the label to preserve their own egos by "proving" that the woman is abnormal. Similarly, men with sexual dysfunction might accuse their partners of being oversexed in an effort to hide their own fears or sense of inadequacy, just as some women who object to the frequency of their partner's sexual advances might accuse him of being oversexed. The difference is that the double standard which exists in our society congratulates a man who is highly sexed and has many partners, calling him a "stud", whereas a woman with the same behavior is often called a "nympho", which carries a negative connotation. Kick Butt Wylde - that is exactly what I'm talkin about. So we need an male perjorative term from a greek island? no that won't work either. I think maybe I'll go with my earlier thought that the notion of slut/nympho etc is over and done with - a woman can be sexually powerful, confident and tuned in and turned on without negative conotations. So there. Ok now a term for a fellow who can't keep up with his girl? hummmm??? Oh, I got it - Single.

dickhead is probably appropriate - but I want to find something similar to nympho. I am going to go have to reasearch the nympho term to get some ideas - my suspicion is that it comes from Freud and the era of vibrators being used in the doctors office for hysterical women. How women survived throughout without having our own vibrators (well I will go out on a limb even further and say without rabbits) is a true mystery. see what this one stirs up... tee hee

Re: honeybiscuit write: Like a unicorn? lol hey how come guys are never called nymphos!?!

Yes!!! LOL, like a unicorn!! Woo hoo. I've called a male friend or two a nympho although I think the term isn't used on men because, well, you know what they use to think with and what it thinks about...he he he... Nympho has always had such a feminine connotation...perhaps we ought to come up with our own term for men...mmmm...now let me think...let's see...I have it!!! We can call them...get this...MEN!!! hahahahahaha

Re:smoosh write: I'm guessing a slut is one who gives it away freely with no regards to her self worth and quantity and not quality is what is the end result. Not sure where the line gets drawn between nympho and slut?

Too funny smoosh - and we see here that our Bitterman and Bizz seem to view a slut as desirous and I am guessing a nympho would fall into the same category. Guys? Is there a difference in your oppinion between a slut and a nympho? And what about that old saying men are so fond of " a lady in public and a slut or whoe in the bedroom"? How does that one figure into the equation? How about let's come up with a smilar adage or saying for the fellas?

I kind of think it is outdated too. But wonder if folks are as hip and open as they proclaim.

Re: jjiggl write: That seems to be an outdated word now because it is assumed that everyone is having secxx with anyone and everyone who they are dating. I think that the word is used when someone is jealous of or angry at someone else. Think about it, if your best girl friend was a serial dater and was having secxx with all of the men that she dated, would you call her a slut? Probably not. But you'd probably call the woman that your ex cheated with a slut. Right? And you are right, men are not called sluts if they are so-called "promiscuous". As a matter of fact, I don't think that there is a word in the English language that when spoken one immediately knows it to mean a derogatory term for a man. And that is not fair.

Lothario. Rake. Gigolo. Roue. They all used to be derogatory terms until it started to somehow incite pride in the fellow you accused. Womanizing and philandering became trend; evolved from a behavior to be ashamed of into bragging material.

In your rocking-chair, by your window dreaming, shall you long, alone. In your rocking-chair, by your window, shall you dream such happiness as you may never feel. –Theodore Dreiser
