As I sit here, lonely hearted... Sighhh. OK, I had a convo with my brother over the phone, and he said something to me that has me thinking and annoyed at the same time. I have my quirks, some knowledge and a good deal of "Life Learning" by picking stuff up as I go along. But am sitting here and totalling it all up, and it adds up to "NADA"!!! Nowt to show for it. Sure, I got my 2 qualifications, but still, THEY should have been done and dusted afore I reached 21... am almost 38... So here it is, what to do??? Do I sit here and carry on regardless hoping that "something will turn up" ??? or do I make a really daft and wild decision and change it all around??? When I was 17, I had a wee accident, which left me lost and nervous.. so to get over that I changed things drastically and disappeared for 6 months to "Find Myself" again... It WORKED!!! 20 years on ... am at that same damned point... So much about my everyday life has me so damned angry, something has to give or I will become an Angry Old Man afore am 40. So here is an idea??? College for the Mature Student??? Not sure what course I would do yet, looking at Computers and Information Technology at HNC Level to go onto HND if I can handle the Student Life!! Would it work??? Would it give me a change of lifestyle enough to make me happier ?? Let me know what ye all think... Please. Hugz fae that Daft Cuddly Scotsman

Quoting AbzWayne:

Is it allowed to re-open this ??? Hmmm OK! Well I missed my opportunity that time around, and the next one as well... Sighhh But in April this year I was on the ball with my applications for the course (HND Provisionally and awaiting acceptance then an interview ) and with the student funding as well which has came through! So here I am, looking at my house and ticking off the lists of stuff I need to get sorted afore I find out one way or the other!!! A special thanks to all the luverly folks that posted up afore, you will never know how much just a simple reply helps me along. As always, hugz fae me that want em ;)

Fantastic news AbzWayne, and of course you are allowed to re-open this. lol You decided and went for it, well done. I know that you will look back on this as one of the best things you ever did. Best of luck, have all my fingers and toes crossed for you. Let us know when you hear one way or the other. Hugs Ozred

If you want to go to college, then do it - you're never too old to learn. The same applies if you want to make a career change. I sat working 5 days a week when what I really wanted to do was write poetry & music. I thought I couldn't afford to take a drop in salary. In the end the pull to do it got too much, & now I've reduced my hours in my main job, which leaves me time for my creative stuff & also gives my over-stuffed mind a rest, lol.

¿

Do what makes you happy, regardless of what friends or family may think. Who wants to get to the sunset of their life thinking about all the things they regret not doing? :)

Butter....You are the bomb!! I am going to get some information from my local Technical College about it....I'd probably go into the orthopedic surgery specialty as I already work with amputees and love it. By the way....how's the new job? Kat

I say, if anyone wants to go to college, despite their age, they should do it. Better yet, IN SPITE of their age...lol! I'm 36, have not quite finished my degree, and whole heartedly plan on going back to school. In fact, I have just sent in some fees to re-test for certification that will allow me to count my hours at work towards my re-entering Nurisng. If you feel you have a passion towards the field in which you want to study, you should do it. Don't pick something just for money, pick it because you feel so strongly about it that you could spend the rest of your life doing SOMETHING related to it. I know I love Nursing, and I learn every day from it. I know I can follow that career path until I retire. So, this is my chosen field. Whether or not I have to wait a little and go after I reach the age of 40, I will do it. I was in Nursing School several years back, and there were many in my cohort who were starting a new career, past 40. In fact, I work with several older nurses I went to school with. (THAT's disheartening-- talk about jealousy!) With that in mind, I know it's entirely possible to have a desire to change your whole life after 40. Age is a NUMBER, not a state of mind! Go for it, Abz :) Best of luck--True

Kat GO FOR IT!!! I know you can do it!!! From talking to you online I know that once you put your mind to a task 90% of the time you will suceed.Kat ,even if it takes twice as long to compleation of the degree plan sayin 6 years instead of 3 years . If you did nothing for the 6 years would you have gained any thing by doing nothing????? Even If you move slowly does not the turtle not beat the Hare in the race?

Check in to evening or weekend classes at the local community collage. If you cannot afford to go full time. Years ago my mom did the very thing while raising 4 kids and caring for a gravely ill husband. If you have to only take one class a semester to do it! Any creature that is not growing and expanding its horizions is a creature on the decline.

I heartily recommend college. I started college as a mture aged student in my 40's, completed my degree and are still in the study mode some years later.

I originally started becasue I needed a decent job to support my 4 children when my marriage broke down and then discovered I love learning. Even with the pieces of paper my life has taken many turns and I don;t regret one of them.

So go for!

WOW!!! Thanks Smoosh, ButerBill, Kat and Oz. Been looking at a few possibilities, my radical idea is out the window, ( no company is gonna sponser a 38 year old guy with no background on a 3 - 6 year period ) which is ok, fair enough, would have been really cool, but really different. So that leaves Administrations ( got a qualification in this at SVQ2 level (SCQF 5) so could do the 1 year HNC (SCQF 7) in this or the HND (SCQF 8) over 2 Years. Or the other one that I havnt any qualifications in at all ?? Computing, for this I need to do an intro course to get onto the HNC stuff?? Leaning towards the Administration at the moment. Will keep ye all updated. Update of the Update... Going to see the folks at the college on Thursday. Then I have to let the folks at the jobcentre know what am planning. and yer, Def Administration HNC I think ... Easy in 1 Year, then I will see about the HND or Degree level entry... Anticipation!!!

You say much in this blog but at the same time so little. :)

I would not jump into further study right now as from what Im reading you lack direction, not knowing what that thing is that you really want to do.

I would look at what you are interested in and what motivates you?  Are you really good at something and is there anything you are passionate about.  This may then lead you towards the thing that will make you happier in life.

The fact that you are angry and stuck, as you state it, says that you have unreolved issues, and despite you trying to keep your head above water, keep drowing in them in some way.

I think what you are tryng to do is great and you can do it, but maybe some more attention to handling some of these things will prevent you from finding yourself in the same place 10 years down the track.

Not attempting to say I know you or what is happening in yuor life, but this was my first instinct response to your blog.  I teach career development and goal setting and this is what i would be saying to one of my students.

Best of luck to you, and well done on trying to get your life where you want it to be.  :)

Life is only as wonderful as you think it is.

I encourage you to follow your heart or your gut feelings and inside instinct - you have to believe in yourself and that it will work. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? computers ? and are you agile or more than comfortable with them as as you get older - it gets harder to study with the young'uns. Talk to your friends, family, mentors and get some real feedback from those that you know you - take an aptitude test to see what you're suited for. And then can you afford student loan or support yourself out of your savings and work part time but leave enough study time etc. - all the practical questions for a 1-3 yr committment to your investment in yourself and your future. Only you know but I wish you well. I have given this some thought previous but encouraged my "sons" to do the studying and follow their career choice.
